A 46-year-old man shot himself in the head in front of police following a traffic stop at the Onhuno roadblock in the Ohangwena region on Saturday afternoon.

The man, who later succumbed to his
injuries in a local hospital, had reportedly shot and wounded a family member prior to the roadblock incident.

“After the driver was requested to stop and pull off the road, he allegedly complied with the request made by the police officer. He then suddenly drew his private pistol and shot himself in the head, and died at the Engela state hospital,” explained Ohangwena regional crime investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Zacharia Amakali.

The victim, who was identified as
Pombili Hauwanga, was travelling
between Oshakati and the Onhuno main road in an Audi Q5 SUV.

“It is alleged that in the Endola area, the driver shot and injured a passenger with his private pistol on the right leg, and
afterwards pushed him out of the car before fleeing the crime scene towards Onhuno,”
said Amakali. He added that the injured victim, named Erickson Lamanguluka Hauwanga (32) and a resident of Ongenga, is a cousin of the deceased.

He is currently admitted at the Engela state hospital in a stable condition. The motive behind the shootings has not yet been established.
