Mboma ready to race …high expectations as athlete gears up for events

HAVING received clearance from World Athletics to participate internationally and being injury free, Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma says she is primed for action.

The track and field star’s management team announced on Friday that she had received clearance from World Athletics to participate in previously unrestricted events, effective 5 April.

The Namibian sprinter, her compatriot Beatrice Masilingi and other Differences in Sex Development (DSD) athletes were temporary suspended by WA Council in March 2023 amid stringent regulations governing testosterone levels for athletes in various categories.

This clearance allows them to compete in all events except those between 400 metres and one mile.

Mboma who sped to silver in the 200m dash at the Tokyo 2020 games told New Era Sport yesterday her team is yet to discuss her competing schedule, including the decision to race in this year’s fifth edition of the Kip Keino Classic Tour which is slated for 20 April in Kenya.

A statement from her management team said Mboma is excited to get back to competing and is currently focusing on her pre-season training and is planning to be based in Europe from May onwards to pursue qualification for the upcoming Olympics.

“This is a significant step and Mboma wants to thank all her supporters for their unwavering encouragement and belief in her. She is looking forward to returning to the track,” it said.
