Mentally challenged man dies in fire

ONGWEDIVA- A 31-year-old mentally challenged man burnt to death on Saturday night in Onamukulo village, Ohangwena region.

According to the Namibian Police weekly crime report, the deceased who has since been identified as Simon Petrus burnt to death after the corrugated iron shack he was sleeping in caught fire and was razed to the ground.

Police said the owner of the shack left it unoccupied after moving to the southern part of the country and, Petrus took over, turning it into his sleeping room.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Petrus’ remains have been transferred to Eehnana District Hospital mortuary for identification and post-mortem.

In an unrelated incident, a 36-year-old resident of Eendobe San Community died after he was stabbed by his brother.

Haifo Lukas died on Friday night from two stab wounds to the chest inflicted by his brother with a pocket knife. The two were allegedly embroiled in a fight at home.

 The suspect has been arrested and police investigations are ongoing in the matter.

Meanwhile, N$368 000 was stolen from the Build It branch in Ondangwa Saturday.

It is alleged that an unknown person broke into the shop, and assaulted a female staff member who was inside the strong room where the safe is kept while she was preparing deposit slips.

After she was assaulted she fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital.  The victim cannot remember who assaulted her and police investigations into the case are ongoing.
