MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, WATER AND FORESTRY
"Query: Minister of Agriculture John Mutorwa, we want to know why the Zambezi Region abattoir is not operating? For how long are you going to turn your back on the Zambezi Region? The farmers need to sell their cattle to the highest bidder. Thus, we appeal to you to look into this matter. It is now two years that the farmers are unable to sell their cattle.Response: The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF), wishes to respond to the SMS that appeared in the Namibian newspaper as follows: the ministry placed an expression of interest advertisement in all local newspapers on February 15, 2016, inviting potential investors to submit their expressions of interest for the lease and operation of each of the abattoirs, namely Katima Mulilo and Oshakati abattoirs. The due date for investors to submit their expression of interest was on March 14, 2016. Since the closing date the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has received in total 7 application forms from bidders, of which two are for Katima Mulilo abattoir, one of the two applications is for both Katima Mulilo and Oshakati abattoir, and the other six are for Oshakati abattoir. MAWF’s officials are currently evaluating the applications for possible investors, who will manage the above-mentioned abattoirs. Therefore the ministry urges members of the public to be patient. Margaret Kalo is a senior public relations officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, E-mail: mushekoj@mawf.gov.na  "
