Namibia ready to take on continent …as golf tourney gets underway

Charles Lohmann, the captain of the Namibia amateur golf team, said the team is prepared, but was adamant about not burdening themselves with undue pressure.

Four golfers including Lohmann, Connor Gibson, Kyle Johnson and Samuel Nel are currently in Benoni, South Africa, where they are set to compete in the 18th edition of the All-Africa Junior Amateur Championship which gets underway today.

Speaking to this publication yesterday from Benoni, Lohmann expressed confidence in himself and his counterparts, saying the atmosphere would play well in their favour.  “As a captain, I am excited to see how the team will perform, I know everyone including myself have been working hard on our game the last couple of weeks, so we have no reason to not perform.

I wouldn’t say we have any specific goals we have set for ourselves, but I do know that if we perform to our full potential, we can definitely have a productive week,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brenda Len, the golf federation secretary general, said she was looking forward to the start of the competition.

“I can’t wait to see how the boys will do; this is a great platform for them to test their skills and potential. I am confident that the boys can do their best in the tournament and reach their individual goals,” said Len. Pieter Fox, president of the junior golf foundation who travelled with the team, expressed confidence in the team. “There are some good senior players, and we also have inexperienced players, who will use this as a good learning curve.

I expect them to have a good finish, but I don’t expect them to have so much pressure on themselves, overall, I believe and trust that they can use this tournament to compete, learn and connect with other golfers,” he said.
