Namibia seeks to extend Angola visit period

WALVIS BAY – Defence minister Frans Kapofi says government wants to amend the entry day period under the visa exemption agreement between Namibia and Angola to be extended to 90 days.

The agreement that was signed in 2005 currently allows Namibians and Angolans to visit the two countries without a visa for up to 30 days.

The visa exemption applies to holders of diplomatic, official and ordinary passport holders for visits up to 30 days.

Kapofi was speaking on Friday during the final day of the Angola–Namibia Joint Commission on Defence and Security that was held in Swakopmund.

According to the minister, there is indeed a need to relook the visa exemption agreement, as the 30-day period has been deemed too short in terms of business, education, tourism and medical needs.

“Hence, Namibia wants to have this period extended to 90 days because doing so will benefit people to people exchange and solidify our relationship further.  In fact, we are ready to sign an addendum to the agreement,” Kapofi said.

The minister indicated the agreement was facilitated to further strengthen bilateral relations and to encourage the free movement of people and goods between the two countries.
