The power of national symbols lies in their ability to bring a nation together, transcending their differences and uniting them under a common purpose, the minister of Information and Communication Technology has said.  Speaking in Otjiwarongo during the activation of the National Symbols Campaign for the Otjozondjupa region on Monday, Peya Mushelenga said: “They remind us that we are all part of something greater than ourselves – a nation built on the principles of democracy, freedom, and equality”.

Mushelenga added that flags have historically played an essential role in identifying enemies and allies, serving as rallying points, and designating leadership during battles. 

“Our national flag, coat of arms, national anthem, and other symbols, therefore, represent the cohesion and distinction that define our great nation,” he noted.

The minister continued that national anthems, in particular, signify the sovereignty of nations and unite citizens in a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood, adding: “They foster a strong sense of nationhood that citizens are committed to safeguarding and upholding”. 

“Today, as we launch the Otjozondjupa regional activation of the National Symbols Campaign, we aim to deepen the understanding and appreciation of our national symbols among the people of this region. We believe that by promoting awareness and understanding of these symbols, we can foster a stronger sense of national pride and unity.”

Addressing the young learners, his message was clear: embrace and learn about the national symbols. 

“They are not just mere images or words; they carry the weight of our shared history and the promise of a brighter future. This campaign is an opportunity for us to understand the significance of our symbols. In addition, how they connect us to our fellow Namibians across the country,” explained Mushelenga. 

He stated that national symbols belong to all Namibians, and they serve as a testament to the unity in diversity that defines the nation. 

“By honouring and respecting our national symbols, we contribute to the preservation of our national identity and the legacy we pass on to future generations.”

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology is the custodian of the Nationhood and National Pride programme.
