Nedbank Namibia Cycle Challenge launched

The 2024 Nedbank Namibia Cycle Challenge was officially launched by Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service Agnes Tjongarero at the Nedbank Campus yesterday.

This will be the 38th edition of the event dubbed ‘the greatest ride under the sun,’ and will see paraplegic cyclists competing again after a long absence.

Speaking at the launch, sport minister Tjongarero encouraged participants to embrace the true spirit of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the Nedbank Cycle Challenge.

“This event is not solely about winning or losing, it’s about the personal growth that comes with taking part in the Nedbank Cycle Challenge. It brings together individuals from all walks of life, uniting them in a shared passion for cycling. The race is not just a display of physical competency; it’s also a celebration of the human spirit and the pursuit of excellence,” she said.

Speaking at the same event, Nedbank Namibia Chief Operating Officer, Victor Ashikoto, said the Nedbank Cycle Challenge traverses the bounds of a race as it is a manifestation of the resilient spirit of a Namibian nation that has embraced cycling in all its diverse forms.

“Cycling transcends age, physical ability, and fitness levels. It is a powerful force for good, promoting physical health and mental well-being and fostering a sense of community that transcends any challenge. This year, we once again extend our warmest welcome to paraplegic athletes, who will inspire us with their determination and compete in three different categories.

Their presence reinforces the idea that cycling knows no bounds and that, indeed, it is a sport for everyone,” he said.

This year, the race will take place on Sunday, 11 February. Cyclists will have the option of taking part in 20km, 30km, 60km, or 100km racecourses.

The starting point will be the Nedbank Campus on the corner of Fidel Castro Street and Rev. Michael Scott Street, and the race will end on Independence Avenue in front of the Zoo Park.

Registration will take place on Friday 9 February at Zoo Park, and a children’s cycle challenge will take place at the Nedbank Namibia campus.

The Nedbank Cycle Challenge co-sponsors include Windhoek Pedal Power Cycling Club, Coca-Cola Namibia, Namibia Health Plan, and PayToday.
