Sport activities in the town of Rehoboth will soon get a massive boost after the town council’s steering committee announced plans to construct a modern sport complex that will host various major events.
The construction of the sport complex is being spearheaded by the town council’s steering committee in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ/GmbH), who are their technical partners.
The new facility will come in handy for the town’s residents and youth from surrounding areas, and the steering committee’s chairperson Bartholomeus Pieters said the construction and subsequent completion of the complex will go a long way in reviving sports and cultural activities at the town.
Pieters shared that the facility will accommodate rugby, volleyball, netball and soccer competitions and will also offer plenty of room for local businesses to sell their products during events. The complex is being constructed on Portion 74 in Rehoboth and is envisaged to be completed by the end of the year.
“Volleyball, netball, and soccer tournaments will all be hosted there, including the various local leagues. Not just sport, but social and cultural events such as music shows, public meetings and others can also be staged there,” he said.
GIZ/GmbH has come on board through its partnership with the Rehoboth Town Council (RTC), and the project is aimed at fostering positive ties and developing the local community and its youth.
“Prospective corporate partners are welcome to engage in discussions with the town council through the steering committee to see how we can all collaborate to make this project a success. We appeal to the general public and the community of Rehoboth to support and help in the safeguarding, maintenance and care of this facility. Let’s preserve it for generations to come,” appealed Pieters, who said the community has welcomed the project with open arms.
FNB Rehoboth women’s rugby club coach, Sadè Eimann was one of the people who expressed great joy with the construction of the facility, saying local clubs will benefit big time once the project is completed.
“Many years ago, we used to play rugby at what they now call the Reho Stadium in the town’s Block A, but these days they are using it for soccer matches but the rugby pitch is totally gone. This new facility will help further revive rugby activities,” she said.
According to Eimann, both the FNB Rehoboth men and women’s rugby teams have been practising and playing at the Rehoboth High School field, which she says can be frustrating due to overcrowding on the pitch at times.
“Sometimes we are three teams on the same field and it gets really frustrating because we are more than 70 players on one field at the same time.” - anchualola@gmail.com
