A night down memory lane with Sledge …local musos to pay tribute to a musical legend
2016-03-11Staff Report 2 Windhoek One of Namibia’s most accomplished solo vocalists, SimeonKanime, aka Sledge, is set to revive the live music scene with a planned bumper musical performance slated at the Khomasdal Community Hall in May. The likeable dreadlocked veteran singer has taken the bull by the horns and will team up with other notable musos from yester year in a one-off musical jam in honour of the late American soul singer Percy Sledge. Simply titled “Sledge live tribute to the King of Soul Percy Sledge” the show will feature former musicians such as the Baronages duo of John Tito May (Klonkies) and Lesley Kozonguizi, aka “Ta Less”, Cynthia Schimming as well as gravel voiced singer/guitarist Beau Ipinge, of Children From Pluto (CFP) fame. The show will be wholly dedicated to the late King of soul with a variety of local musicians dishing out popular cover versions of Percy Sledge hits such as When a man loves a women, Cover me, Take time to know her, Push Mr pride and Out left field. “Look, Percy Sledge was a musical legend who inspired lots of the marginalised black people through his music during the height of apartheid. His musical lyrics gifted us genuine hope and also made us belief that blacks do have a place in the sun,” relates Sledge with tears of joy rolling down his ageing cheeks. Sledge is not a newcomer to the local music scene. He is an old hand who enjoyed successful stints with formidable bands such as the now defunct Kuisebmond pop ensemble, Dead Wood, The Gypsies, Locomotion and the all time popular Ugly Creatures. He would occasionally also perform or jam with some of the finest pop bands from neigbouring South Africa touring Namibia in the 70s including the Rockets, Jacky (both Cape Town) and Prunes (Durban) with great aplomb.
