Northern youth treated to inspirational session
2016-06-22Staff Report 2 Windhoek Close to 200 youth - mainly female - converged at Oshakati recently where they were treated to a day of inspiration and fun. The youth, aged 15 years and above, were treated to a rare inspirational opportunity on June, 11 when various speakers shared thoughts on the importance of leadership. The youth were also taught about the importance of making good choices and taking responsibility for their actions. The speeches centred on unwanted pregnancies, alcohol and drug abuse and pleasing people, as some of the destructive habits young people encounter. Other than the motivational talks, the young women participated in a 5-km walk and were treated to performances of various sorts. The founder of the You Are A Gift Trust, which amongst others, aims to instil self-respect and self-love in young women, Angela Katjimune hosted the event. She stressed that young people should stay away from destructive habits and take responsibility for their lives in order to become constructive citizens. “All of us are leaders. If you cannot lead your own life, how will you lead others? We want these young people to start accepting responsibility. We spoke to them about their choices and emphasised that they should not be people-pleasers. It went really well, given that it was the first time we hosted the National Young Women’s Day outside Windhoek,” said Katjimune. A life skills teacher at Ondangwa, Karin Batista, had pleasing words regarding the impact of the Trust and the young women’s events, which are held annually. She also urged young people not to allow society to define them. “The formula for success remains hard work, determination and a positive attitude,” Batista told the youth who came from as far as Windhoek, Ondangwa, Oshakati, Ongwediva and the surrounding areas. The Trust also celebrated five years of existence on National Young Women’s day. Katjimune said the Trust has grown over the years, as there is evidence of the impact it has had in the lives of young women. She added that even if only a few people - or even just one - who attended the events gained insight from it, is an achievement because one life has been saved. “We saw that these events really make a difference. Even if we can just make a difference in the life of one person it is enough,” said Katjimune. Previously, the National Young Women’s Day events were held in Windhoek. However, there are now plans to take it to the various regions to inspire the youth countrywide. “Next year we’re going to Keetmanshoop. I must also stress that this would not have been possible if it was not for our sponsors, who gave no less than N$10 000 towards this year’s event,” Katjimune said. 2016-06-22Staff Report 2
