2013-10-03Mathias Haufiku RUNDU - A male nurse accused of raping a patient in his care at a state clinic in the Kavango Region earlier this year appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Magistrate Esme Molefe postponed the case to October 15, 2013 pending a decision by the prosecutor general on the matter. “The prosecutor general’s decision is not ready. The matter is thus remanded to 15 October as arranged with your lawyer. Your bail and the conditions attached to it are extended,” said Molefe during the court proceedings yesterday. Christoph Thiteketa Hausiku was arrested on May 13, 2013 after his 17-year-old victim alleged that she was raped while seeking medical treatment at the Ncuncuni clinic, 60 kilometres south of Rundu earlier this year on May 08. According to the victim's statement, she went to the clinic after experiencing abdominal pains. As the accused examined her he apparently told her to lie on the examination bed and pulled down her trousers to knee-level, covered her mouth with his hand and forcefully had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her. The accused also threatened to beat or kill the victim if she dared to tell anyone about the rape, it is alleged. He is currently out on bail of N$2 000. Hausiku has to report to the Rundu police station every Friday evening and is not allowed to interfere with a police investigation, state witness or the complainant. He is also not allowed to leave the country or visit Hamweyi village or Ncuncuni if the investigating officer does not accompany him. Public prosecutor Albert Titus appeared for the State.
