Omahenene electricity connection progressing well

ONDANGWA – The Ondangwa Town Council has commenced with the electrification of 153 houses in the Omahenene informal area.

This follows the completion of electricity connections for 300 houses in the same area in January 2024.

Ondangwa Town Council spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha told Nampa on Tuesday that they have already identified the 153 households which will benefit from the project, which is funded by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and executed by the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored).

She said the project was supposed to commence in the 2020/2021 financial year, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, its implementation was put on hold.

“The process has started in the Omahenene informal area, and homeowners who qualify for household connections will benefit from it,” she added.

Shitalangaho-Mutikisha indicated that Omahenene is one of the oldest informal settlements in Ondangwa, and is also classified as a low-income area.

In the past, there were a number of challenges associated with the area because of the lack of electricity supply, and the importance of household electrical connections can thus not be overstated as it is integral for safety, functionality and comfort, she continued.
