Ongos Ladies crowned WSL champions

Ongos Ladies FC etched their names in history on Saturday by becoming the first team to win the league unbeaten throughout the 2023/24 First National Bank (FNB) Women’s Super League.

Ongos faced V-Power Angels in their final match, thrashing them 7-0 to secure an undefeated season. The win saw Ongos walk away with N$250 000, Okahandja Beauties took home N$150 000, while third-placed Girls and Goals earned N$100000.

Speaking after the victory, coach Shama Gure downplayed the ease of their unbeaten run. He emphasised the feat showcased the team’s exceptional quality.

“We consistently aimed to collect maximum points this season – and thankfully, we finished without a single defeat. While I’ve been critical of our performance, despite wins, I’ve always demanded more, and their hard work paid off with this league title,” he said.

Looking forward, Gure acknowledged missing the Council of Southern African Football Associations' (Cosafa) Championship League last year.

“Our main focus now is to start preparing for that competition, which is scheduled for August. We’ve put in the work, and deserve to play against the best. So, that’s what we’re going to do,” he added.

In other fixtures, Ramblers Ladies defeated Ongwediva Queens, now known as African Stars Queens, 3-1. Following the match, Ramblers’ head coach Hafeni Ndeitunga applauded his players for their outstanding performance.

“We’ve been sharp in the last five games of the season. This win is a testament to our hard work,” he said.

“It wasn’t easy, but I believed in the project, and we kept pushing. Today’s victory is dedicated to the players.”

Meanwhile, Ongwediva Queens' captain Soini Sheeya said despite the loss, she was proud of how her side performed.

“It’s not the results we would have wanted, but I am proud of how the team gave it their all on the field of play. I think from here, we will go back to the drawing board, and arrange ourselves for next season,” she said.  In other matches, Beauties defeated Nampol 2-1, and Arrows beat Nust 3-1.
