OPUWO – Over 600 learners have enrolled at the new Otuzemba Primary School in Opuwo.
At present, the school has 16 teachers.
The school opened its gates at the beginning of the new term, and is expected to cater for learners from the surrounding locations and villages.
The Otuzemba Primary School’s existence was necessitated by the huge number of learners from villages such Okondaunue, Orutjandja and other locations like Otuzemba and Onduunje, who used to travel long distances to the Opuwo Primary School and the Kameru Primary School to attend school. That was a huge challenge, as parents could not afford taxi fares to and from school, despite the harsh weather conditions sometimes.
Speaking on behalf of Opuwo mayor Rosa Mbinge-Tjeundo, Matjiru Forester Tjijahura, a member of the town’s management committee, noted that the school is an answered prayer for the affected residents.
“Having this institution here at the centre of these locations will reduce the burden to the learners themselves in terms of travelling. Sometimes our parents cannot afford to pay for taxis, but they are forced to pay for taxi for the children to reach school. But having a school here at the centre will really help these children to access education closer to their homes,” he added.
Regional director of education Angeline Jantze said education is the cornerstone of progress and empowerment, indicating that it equips individuals to navigate and overcome challenges, as well as create a better future for themselves.
“In this school, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity and compassion,” she added.
Moreover, the director said education is a collective effort, and parents must thus continue with their unwavering support and dedication towards their children’s education. She also urged teachers to teach learners hygiene, especially the use of ablution facilities.
‘’Make sure principal, teachers, that you compile a timetable where each grade will have a chance to pick up papers in the environment. Teachers, please teach our learners how to use the ablution facilities, provide them with toilet paper, teach them, because this school is yours. Take ownership of this school,” emphasised Jantze.
The school commenced with construction in 2021, and was completed last year to the tune of N$25 million. It has the capacity to host about 900 learners.
