Performance Show Par Excellence at Warehouse
2006-04-21Staff Report 2 "Ongoma, in conjunction with the Warehouse Theatre, is presenting a performance show par excellence of Robin Auld & Barry van Zyl from April 26 till April 30, it was announced in a press release. Robin Auld has over the past decade successfully launched more than eight albums both internationally and in South Africa, and returned to his roots, Cape Town, in December 2005. He does a lot of acoustic, supper club concert type gigs, and from this year acoustic plus percussion with Barry van Zyl, who is the drummer with Johnny Clegg and Savuka, taking some time off. The musician categorises his music somewhere around the Crowded House/Ben Harper style while this is what some of the critics had to say: ""...it hops from folk-rock to pure pop to African-tinged licks to Celtic tricks with ease."" And: ""It's wife's-making-the-slaai-I'm-turning-the-braai...will-for-sure-sound-good-live-music."" Well known to South African audiences from his hits 'Love Kills', 'Long Lost', 'All of woman' and many others, Cape Town based Robin Auld's sound has evolved from the pop production values of his earlier work to the contemporary mix of roots and melody that characterises his sound today. Since the days of Z-Astaire when he had a number one with 'All of woman', he has been travelling extensively, touring the States and the UK while releasing albums. The rest of his schedule was taken up with performances and recordings in New York, Nashville and London. He spent 2005 in the UK promoting his international release, ""Diamond of a Day"", playing at some of the biggest UK folk and roots festivals - most notably the Cambridge Folk Festival and the Tartan Hearts Festival in the Scottish highlands - and the album has been very well received by the British press. Barry van Zyl has featured in many of South Africa's top acts and has been on tour with Johnny Clegg for much of 2005. Highlights include guest performances with Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant and Brian May, as well as headlining the 46664 05 concerts in George, South Africa and Tromso, Norway, opening the Montreal Jazz Festival to an audience of 125 000 people and double-bill shows with Lenny Kravitz, the Neville Brothers and Taj Mahal. The duo idea came about from years of bumping into each other, having informal jams after hours at the Grahamstown Arts Festival and talking about a project which has never worked time-wise. However, with Barry taking a rest from touring this year, the timing was right and their roots-pop sound has been touring throughout South Africa with more dates being confirmed. Their show here in Namibia will feature a mix of arrangements of Robin's older songs, some from the recent ""Diamond of a Day"", and some brand new ones from ""Jungle of one"".
