Personality of the week - I believe in hard work and discipline

Kevian Alcock, a 17-year-old budding netball player, is basking in the glory of Khomas region’s triumphant victory in the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup netball tournament for three consecutive years.

A first-year Human Resources and Management student at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, Alcock attributes their success to relentless hard work.

As the captain of the regional team, Alcock sat down with this publication following Khomas region’s league triumph, reflecting on her aspirations for the future. Here’s a glimpse into the conversation:

How long have you been playing, and what inspired you to start playing netball?

I’ve been playing for 12 years. My parents are my inspiration. My mom played netball in her youth, and my dad’s passion and discipline in sports motivated me to take up the game.

What positions do you typically play, and do you have a preferred position on the field?

I usually play as a wing attack (WA) and centre, but my preference lies with the wing attack position.

Can you share a memorable achievement or highlight from your career so far?

In 2023, I earned a spot on the U/17 national team – and currently, I lead the U/19 Khomas netball team. This year, clinching the Nedbank Newspaper Cup for the third consecutive time stands out as a significant milestone.

How do you balance your netball commitments with your academic or other extracurricular activities?

I prioritise time management, and ensure efficient use of my time while maintaining discipline in every aspect of my life.

What are your short-term and long-term goals as a netball player, both individually and as part of a team?

My short-term goal is to give my best to any team I represent and remain dedicated. I’ve been selected for the provisional U/19 national netball team, and I’m committed to giving my all. Ultimately, my long-term ambition is to earn a spot on the senior national team, the Desert Jewels.
