2008-01-22Staff Report 2 By Petronella Sibeene WINDHOEK The Roads Authority has raised more than N$1 million through its personalized number plate exercise aimed at raising funds needed for the maintenance of the country's road network. In terms of revenue, initial projections were to raise N$1 million in a period of twelve months but this figure was exceeded when the RA raised N$1.2 million in five months from the sale of 607 personalized number plates. Last May, the RA announced that Namibian motorists would by June 04 2007 have an opportunity to display the licence number plate of their choice. This was done on condition that such number plates should not be obscene, offensive or blasphemous. Public Relations Officer of the Roads Authority Audrin Mathe said yesterday that the response from motorists has been overwhelming. So far, Windhoek has the most sales contributing 57 per cent to the sales, seconded by Oshakati that contributed 10 percent. Other personalized number plate sales for Swakopmund, Ondangwa, Tsumeb, Walvis Bay, Mariental and Rundu ranged between two and six percent.
