A truck driver from the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) has resigned amid an investigation into the disappearance of over N$1 million worth of fuel from the company’s storage facility in Walvis Bay.
“I confirm that the matter has been reported to the [Walvis Bay] police. The driver of the truck resigned last week in the wake of our investigations,” stated Utaara Hoveka, spokesperson for Namcor, in an interview with New Era on Wednesday.
The authorities state that the fuel was stolen from the corporation’s National Oil Storage Facility (NOSF) in Walvis Bay.
While the corporation declined to disclose commercially-sensitive information or any details that may impede ongoing investigations, they provided a statement regarding the missing fuel, indicating that 39 993 litres of diesel were unaccounted for in December 2023.
A further 39 891 litres of the same product went missing last month.
“Loading documents suggest that the two loads were destined for a customer site. However, there is no evidence of the product having arrived, or been received by the bulk fuel customer. Namcor conducted an extensive internal investigation, and proceeded to open a case of theft with the Walvis Bay authorities. The matter is currently under investigation,” the company stated.
Acting Namcor managing director Ebson Uanguta on Wednesday also expressed the company’s commitment to resolving the matter, and curbing such behaviour.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that the culprits responsible for this bear the full consequences of their actions. There is a legal and moral obligation imposed upon Namcor to operate in accordance with the highest standards, commensurate with a national oil company,” he affirmed.
