2015-08-07Staff Report 2 Long story short, people please stop annoying Dj’s with your requests! Not so long ago, I wrote about two types of Dj’s. The one that pitches up 15 minutes before an event, drunk, missing a cable, skoro skoro laptop, plays Atchu Atchu Cha 10 times in a 2 hour event, and plays the music loud while the MC is officiating. In any other event today I will be drumming support for the Dj that insists on briefings the week leading up to the event, helps you promote the event on their platforms, schedules a sound check hours before the commencement of the event, has a working laptop PLUS quality sound & cordless mics and has the event go off smoothly without the event organiser being worried about being embarrassed because the music is on point as per target market. Yes. That professional Dj you just paid 10grand to make sure the tunes flow. Let the Dj do their work. Stop trying to tell the Dj what songs to play on the day. It does not only sit well with the Dj and the overall image of the event. If by that professional Dj’s standard you had briefings leading up to the week of the event, than the subject of target audience and their music thereof should’ve been discussed at length. It’s no brainer that based on your discussion and prior demands and target audience considerations that the Professional Dj went to source music that befits the occasion. It defeats the purpose if you drum up the Dj with silly requests on the day of the event because you downed a few 061s. It’s embarrassing for all, so stop it. Let’s discuss technically how this is unprofessional. Music is a journey. A professional will prepare that journey for the event. If it so happens that there is a request, it spoils the journey and intended purpose of the journey. Think of it as a train derailment. Often these requests are sanctioned through drunken slurs. This creates a bad impression on your event and your ability to trust the people you hired to see your event out. We cannot rule out the possibility of ill preparation on the side of a Dj. However, I have placed the highest trust in Namibian Professional Djs. Of course, if it is the one that pitches up 15 minutes before an event, drunk, missing a cable, skoro skoro laptop, plays Atchu Atchu Cha 10 times in a 2 hour event, and plays the music loud while the MC is officiating, well then hell yeah, that Dj will disappoint you. Going for cheaper Djs with an unproven track record and wanting to take shortcuts will get you that. However, a Dj with a proven track record, profile and rate card deserves your trust with music selection during the event.
