2015-07-22Staff Report 2 Rundu Prisca Itepu from Rundu, who debated as part of the team from the north-eastern region, was crowned best female speaker in the NAMCOL annual debating competition held in Rundu last weekend. The award for best male speaker for the north went to Michael Haihambo from Ongwediva. The debate was based on various trending local and international topics. “The debate is held annually and this is the third time it is being held. We, in the north eastern regions, are lucky to be the host and our grade 10 team won gold, given that none of the previous hosts won on their soil, said Dina Haufiku, NAMCOL’s north eastern regional manager, who heads the Rundu office. “This means a lot to our learners. The event is held to keep our NAMCOL learners busy and to assure them that they are not left out,” she said. Grade 10 learners from the north-eastern regions and grade 12 learners from the northern regions took home the floating trophy as this year’s NAMCOL debating champions. All members of the winning teams were handed gold medals, as well as N$700 for each team member. The grade 10 team from the Khomas region and the grade 12 team from the north-eastern region got silver medals and earned N$500 for each team member, as they both took second place. Bronze medals and N$350 for each team member went to the third runners up, the grade 10 team from the central regions, Otjozondjupa, Erongo and Kunene, as well as the grade 12 team from the Khomas region. Fourth place went to the grade 10s from the northern regions, while the grade 12 team from central region got N$200 for each member of the team, although they did not receive any medals on the day.
