Scholtz and Baard impress at T20 qualifiers
Windhoek Namibia’s senior national side might have missed out on qualifying for the T20 World Cup next year in India, but the team sure made a lasting impression – especially Bernard Scholtz and Stephen Baard. Scholtz, the younger brother of Captain Nicolaas Scholtz, was nominated as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday. The prestigious title didn’t come as a surprise as the left-hand spinner took a staggering 14 wickets in the tournament. Only Alasdair Evans of Scotland and John Mooney of Ireland got to the same tally. However, Scholtz’s exploits included a triple wicket maiden against Papua New Guinea. The quality of the Namibian team was not restricted to the bowling department as Stephen Baard scored the most runs of the entire event – he eventually managed a massive 309 runs. Second placed run scorer Ben Cooper of the Netherlands got 241 runs – 68 less than the Namibian. Baard also scored the most sixes – 14 in total. His highest score in a single game was 87 runs against Papua New Guinea.
