Social Accountability and School Governance initiative launched
WINDHOEK- To strengthen the capacity of learners and the school board in the decision making process of the school and ensure participatory democracy, the Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, the United Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) and European Union (EU) launched the Social Accountability and School Governance initiative (EDU) in the Ohangwena and Hardap regions. Their primary mandate is to identify the issues affecting the quality of their education, and once the issues are identified to engage the community, civil society,  the government and all parties that are interested in the quality of education in Namibia. “In these publications we also introduce a character called EDU. EDU allows the learners an opportunity to meet someone that they can relate to, hence him transferring most of the information in the articles,” says Patrick Sam, a  member of the programme committee. An EDU circle is a group of learners who meet at least once per week to discuss issues that may be affecting their ability to learn and participate in school. “This initiative has a group of 12 learners that made up a study circle. The circle is setup in each school (48 schools) soon to be 148, the group consists of six boys and six girls,” says Sam. The initiative will be applied in all 14 regions.
