Small livestock and crop farmers in the south and central-eastern parts of the country have been warned to take extra precautions against an advancing massive cold front, which will see towns such as Rosh Pinah, Aus and others receiving heavy winter rain showers. 

According to predictions by the Namibia Meteorological Services, winter showers of between 50mm and 100mm are expected to hit most of the southern parts of the country and could last for the whole week.

“Very cold conditions are equally expected in the west, central and eastern regions, which will see cold to cool conditions also persist for the rest of the week,” it warned. 

With the anticipated winter rain, especially in the south, the Meteorological office has issued an early warning to small livestock and crop farmers to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their animals and crop fields.

In the deep interior parts of the country, partly cloudy and cold to mild conditions can be expected but somewhat warm conditions in the north should be anticipated, while towns such as Kamanjab, Omaruru, Otjiwarongo, Gobabis, Windhoek and Karasburg can all expect dropped temperatures.

Historically, Namibia’s southern farmers suffer huge losses as a result of perennial winter showers, especially those farming with goats, sheep, pigs and those involved with crop production. 

Goats and sheep are hardy animals, but cold months can get challenging for them many a time. 

Adult goats are strong enough to easily survive cold temperatures as long as they get proper feed and shelter. 

The kids need additional care and attention, mainly if they are born during the winter season.
