2016-07-06Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK Standard Bank has taken strides in investing in talented young people and also extended the process by looking at improving the lives of young people in a way that would be meaningful and lasting through the Standard Bank Graduate Programme. The first intake of graduates joining the bank under the newly introduced annual Graduate Programme was early in March. One such student is Jonas Tomanga, who completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree at the University of Namibia (Unam). In this interview, courtesy of the bank’s public relations division, he gives his impressions of the programme. Why did you choose to join Standard Bank Graduate Programme? Standard Bank Graduate Programme offers me the rare opportunity to learn everything about banking, from its frontline services to the back-end enabling services. It also offers me the opportunity to develop my skills, acquire knowledge and gain valuable experience in the banking industry. Hobbies/Interests: Gaming, body-building, football, technology and art. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Windhoek, although I never got to go to school here until tertiary. Your favourite quote: “The ability to learn is the most important quality a leader can have.” Do you have any unusual habits? Not that I know of, I like to keep myself moderated. What attracted you to Standard Bank? Standard Bank is the biggest bank in Africa and one of the best enabling institutions of this great continent’s economic growth. I have the opportunity to learn from the biggest financial institution in Africa, its team and from years of experience. What have been your key achievements since joining Standard Bank? Settling in at Standard Bank has been my priority and I have done great thus far. This will give me the confidence, identity and enable me to play my part in the team. What are you reading at the moment? Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, by Ashlee Vance. What do you do to unwind after a long day’s work?
