Swapo holds massive rally in Kavango West
MPUNGU - With Less than 12 months remaining before Namibians go to the polls to elect a government of their choice, the country’s ruling party over the weekend conducted a major election campaign in Kavango West region in a bid to lure voters towards retaining its political majority. This time around, Swapo took the election campaign to Mpungu, situated about 185 kilometres west of Rundu. The rally was attended by several of its top brass from the northern part of the country and hundreds of party supporters who braced the heat to attend the rally. Swapo Party President Hifikepunye Pohamba led the proceedings and hundreds of people waited anxiously to listen to the man that they mostly only see on television. Pohamba made use of the opportunity to highlight several national programmes of the government aimed at improving the lives of all Namibians. He singled out programmes such as the Mass Housing Development Programme, green scheme projects and the construction of roads and bridges in rural areas. Pohamba however acknowledged that his government faces several challenges, but indicated that measures have been devised to deal with the challenges. “Our country is still faced by many challenges, including unemployment, especially among the youth and women, poverty and under-development. We are dealing with and addressing the challenges through several policies and programmes,” he said. “I call on you to vote for the Swapo Party and its presidential candidate, Comrade Hage Gottfried Geingob,” lobbied Pohamba. “With your support, our mighty Swapo Party, and our candidate, Comrade Hage Gottfried Geingob will emerge victorious! “ he exclaimed. He urged voters to stand as one people with one destiny and make their contributions to build a brighter future. “The Swapo Party will continue leading the way towards economic prosperity and social advancement of all our people,” said a confident Pohamba. He assured the nation that Swapo “shall never waver in our commitment to the development of our country for the benefit of all our people”. “As a political party that started as the only mass-based national liberation movement, we believe in the inclusivity and equal participation of all our citizens in matters pertaining to the development of Namibia and its people,” he said. A sea of blue, red and green Swapo attire adorned most of those in attendance who spent some of their time at the rally dancing to music by the Ndilimani cultural group. Police officers and party officials kept watch outside the open venue during the proceedings.   By Mathias Haufiku
