Two-year-old dies after being cut with grinder
2016-06-14Staff Report 2 Windhoek A two-year-old girl died in hospital after she was accidentally cut on the head with a grinder by a neighbour. The accident happened on Friday at about 18h10 at Beijing Street in Otjomuise. The deceased child was identified as Hileni Hwuandi. “It is alleged the suspect, who is a carpenter, was busy cutting wood with a grinder at his residence and while turning [around] with the grinder still on, he accidentally cut the girl, who was standing behind him,” said Matheus. The child was rushed to Katutura Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The police have opened a case of culpable homicide against the neighbour. In an unrelated matter, an 18 month-old boy drowned in a container of tombo (a cheap home-made alcoholic brew) at Dolphin Location Cucashop at Okathima Ka Nangolo village in Okalongo Constituency. It is alleged the deceased was with his grandmother, who was inside the cucashop while the child was playing outside. “The grandmother left for the nearby cucashop and when she returned she found the deceased drowned in the container of tombo. The deceased was identified as Antonia Timoteus Amunyela. In a separate case, a 49-year-old man at Cham Cham village near Oshivelo locked his 30-year-old partner in the room with their one-year-old toddler and fired three shots into the room through the locked door. “No person was injured, but the police arrested the suspect and confiscated the firearm. He is charged with attempted murder, read with the Domestic Violence Act, negligently handling a firearm, and discharging a firearm in public place. The suspect is due to appear at Tsumeb Magistrate’s Court on Monday. In Ohangwena Region the police opened a rape and assault case after a 17-year-old male suspect reportedly hit a 20-year-old woman on the forehead with a stone and raped her. The police did not specify the location of the incident, but said it allegedly happened at around 00h30 on Saturday. “According to the victim, she was on her way from church when the suspect approached her and allegedly grabbed her by the neck and overpowered her. The suspect laid the victim on the ground and forced her into a sexual encounter and hit her with a stone on the forehead and she sustained an open wound,” Matheus noted. The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear at Eenhana Magistrate’s Court today. In similar case, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 27-year-old suspect at about Anties Bar Bersig at Twyfelfontein settlement. The police allege the suspect met the young victim at a bar and lured her to a place within the premises where he forced himself onto her. The rape suspect is expected to appear before Khorixas Magistrate’s Court today. 2016-06-14Staff Report 2
