KATIMA MULILO – The Zambezi Museum last week awarded learners who participated in the bird-drawing competition last year. The competition was aimed at encouraging learners to showcase their talent. According to Siyayo Obyster, who is the curator at the museum, about 145 learners were received from schools but only three students from three different schools performed exceptionally well.

They were all boys; Dan Kabidiku from Caprivi Senior Secondary School received the first prize, and the second prize was given to Malesu Lyanabo from Mavuluma Combined School (now at CSSS), and Branson Kwala from Kizito College took third place.

“Learners were requested to make a neat colour drawing of a bird of their choice on an A4 paper. The bird was to be one they have seen in the area of the Zambezi region. Nine schools took part in the competition, and more than six students from each of the nine schools participated,” Sibeya.

In a speech read on his behalf by acting deputy director Elvis Liwakala, the Zambezi education director Josty Kawana encouraged learners to partake in all the activities the museum presents, as they are not only promoting art but also culture.

The director said it could save as a form of employment for learners who are not academically gifted.

“The museum wants to involve learners in the development of the galleries for the museum, including research. School activities at the museum are encouraged, and it is a pity that some of the learners did not take part,” said Kawana.

The winning learners were all awarded certificates, t-shirts, cups and books by the museum.
