Unam are Rugby Premiership Champions ...Diergaardt hails players’ character
2015-08-31Staff Report 2 " Windhoek The University of Namibia (Unam) Rugby Club were on Saturday officially crowned Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) Premiership champions after brushing aside a stubborn Wanderers team by 37-23 to lift the trophy at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek. Under the trusted mentorship of veteran coach Johan Diergaardt, Unam gallantly marched to their first ever league title; indeed an incredible feat considering that it was Diergaardt's first season in charge of the team. ""It’s indeed a great feeling, particularly for the players who have worked really hard this season. It was not easy, but we worked extra hard and I believe Saturday's victory was testimony to our hard work. It's only my first season in charge of the team, so it's really a good feeling closing off in the way we did."" ""Obviously next season will be another huge mountain to scale, but we’re ready for the challenge. Since we’re now champions, we anticipate fierce competition come next season and that would also mean we have to work harder, remain in the gym and polish our game in all departments. With the current crop of players, I can only see us grow stronger and stronger as a team, as the players are hungry for success and want to keep improving,"" Diergaardt said. In the NRU Reserve League, it was different affair for Wanderers 2, who had earlier defeated Unam 2 by 39-25 to be crowned reserve league champions, while Mariental also managed to finish the day on a winning note after trouncing coastal outfit Dolphins by 42-26 to clinch the coveted First League Cup. Namibia wins CAR Africa U-19 Trophy Beyond the borders, Namibia's U-19 team also ended the weekend on a high when they narrowly defeated Zimbabwe by 34-32 to win the CAR Africa U-19 trophy in Harare.
