A group of 30 women graduated last week from the MTC-initiated Women in Golf programme held at Windhoek Country Club.

According to project coordinator Steffie Skrywer, the programme was launched in 2022 with the goal of networking and providing women with opportunities to excel in golf. 

She highlighted that golf is predominantly male-dominated, but that women should not be excluded.

“It’s a great platform for women to network. We believe in empowering females who have been under-represented in this sport. We wanted to create a space where women can thrive,” she said.

“We’ve noticed that most of the time, we’re caught up in our jobs and boardroom meetings. This programme offers us a chance to break away from that, and connect with other women on the course while enjoying this exhilarating sport,” she added.

Over 25 women graduated in the first phase of the programme, which spanned two months, with plans for more intake in the future. 

Lisa Matomola, a programme graduate, shared her experience, stating that she learned a great deal and stepped out of her comfort zone.

“It was challenging initially, but I found it increasingly interesting as time went on. This programme taught me valuable lessons, as I interacted with individuals from various backgrounds and gained a deeper understanding of the sport. It taught me discipline and patience, as golf requires both. Overall, it was an essential programme, and I encourage other women interested in the sport to join,” said Matomola. Another graduate, Mauriza Fredericks, described the programme as pivotal in the current landscape. 

“I want to express my gratitude to MTC for this programme. I learned a tremendous amount during my time in it, and I believe it will play a significant role in bringing women together. I am now well-informed about the game, its intricacies, and most importantly, the empowerment it offers. It’s crucial,” she said.
