Zimbabwean hawkers convicted of illegal trading
2015-10-07Staff Report 2 WALVIS BAY Four Zimbabweans arrested by the Namibian Police (NamPol) at Walvis Bay for illegally selling goods were convicted of illegal trading when they appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The suspects, all male, are in Namibia on visitors’ visas.? They were apprehended on September 21 in the Kuisebmond residential area after the police learned that their visas do not allow them to conduct business in Namibia.? Given Tarugarira, 19, Gankayi Shamada, 33, Onismos Chikwave, 31, and Owen Kudakwishi Munatsi, 21, sold goods such as hats, T-shirts, shoes, socks and steering wheel covers. They conducted their own defence and pleaded guilty. They further admitted that they are aware that conducting business while in a foreign country as a visitor is illegal. In mitigation, Shamada said, “I wanted to make money and save it to pay for my transport to return home.” Munatsi noted that he decided to sell T-shirts, because he needed to support himself, as he has no other form of income. Chikwave and Tarugarira also indicated that they sold goods to support themselves and to save up to pay for transport back to Zimbabwe at the end of this month. Each suspect indicated that he is willing to pay a fine not exceeding N$500. State Prosecutor Faith Nyaungwa proposed a fine of N$2 000 or eight months’ imprisonment. Magistrate John Sindano then sentenced the four men to a fine of N$2 000 each. Failure to pay the fine could result in eight months’ imprisonment.
