WINDHOEK – Mathematically, the coveted MTC Premiership title still remains a two-horse race between reigning champions Black Africa and Katutura glamour football club African Stars.
However, history is in the making as whoever wins the league title will set a new record. As it stands, Stars top the log standings with an amazing points tally of 56 with 15 points still at stake – the same figure as the highest points tally of 56 fashioned out by BA in 1999.
With five matches left before the curtain comes down on the 2014/2015 season, arguably the best fiercely contested campaign in history – six points separate the two Katutura giants going into the decisive home straight.
A narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of hoodoo team Tigers looked to have all but ended BA’s title aspirations but the Gemengde outfit was thrown another lifeline when Stars were surprisingly humbled (1-0) by a determined ten-man Civics in a match that was meant to cement their title credentials. With matches coming thick and fast, both teams are expected to drop points and Ronnie Kanalelo’s charges will have to pull out all stops and hope other results go their way as the title race is no longer in their hands.
Realistically, Stars must lose at least two matches and draw one in order to allow their closest challengers to sneak in given the Diaz House outfit’s superior goal difference, a scenario that’s highly unlikely to unfold while BA must win all the remaining matches.
Nevertheless, miracles do happen in the game of football and the defending champions will now have to wait with bated breath for the Reds to suffer a dramatic dip in form to have any chance of overhauling the current runaway log leaders.
Third placed Tigers still have a realistic chance to claim the available runner-up spot but Ingweinyama must first shake off their habitual inconsistency if they are to entertain any hopes of finishing above BA in the race for 2nd spot.
