MTC Salute Boxing Academy announced yesterday that their next boxing event will take place early next month, on 5July, at the Windhoek Country Club.
The bonanza will be headlined by Abed Shikongo, who will face off against Byson Gwayani from Malawi in a non-title bout.
The main bout will be supported by Fillemon Nghutenanye, who is set to take on South Africa’s Sihle Jelwana. Additionally, Nathanael Kakololo, who last fought last year, will return to the ring in an eight-round lightweight bout against the experienced David Shinuna.
Speaking at the launch yesterday at the Namibia Industrial Development Agency building in the capital, Shikongo, whose last fight was a draw against Harry Simon Junior late last year, expressed his happiness to return to the ring, even though it was not the fight he had initially hoped for.
“I have been training since the last time I fought, and I believe that I am still in good shape. Returning to the ring is very important for me and my growth as a boxer, and I really appreciate what my promoters have done to secure this fight,” Shikongo stated.
“I wanted a rematch against Harry, as I said after our bout last year.
We went into talks this year for the rematch, but his team later withdrew from the bout. However, I will take on this guy, whom I know is good too,” he added.
His opponent, Gwayani, boasts a record of 28 fights with 16 wins and 12 losses. According to Shikongo, he is not fazed by his rival.
“I know he stays in South Africa and that’s where he trains, and I believe him training out there makes him think he stands a chance against me. I have seen his videos, and he doesn’t scare me. I am waiting for him so I can send him packing,” Shikongo confidently said.
Kakololo grateful for return
Meanwhile, Kakololo thanked his promoters for their excellent work in ensuring their boxers get ring time.
“It’s not easy to secure fights lately due to funding, which has become very difficult.
For my promoter to arrange a bonanza like this one is something we are all grateful for as boxers at the stable,” he said.
On his return to action, he added, “It’s every boxer’s dream to be in the ring, and for me, this is what I have been longing for a very long time.
Bouts are hard to scout, but I am prepared, and I hope to see my opponent in the ring come July,” he said.
