Telecom Namibia has acknowledged recent service quality challenges that have left some customers frustrated with mobile and fixed data services, as well as roaming.
“We assure our customers that we are actively working to stabilize network performance through continuous traffic optimisation and technical enhancements,” Telecom said about the service challenges over the past few weeks.
In a statement issued yesterday the company noted that its engineers and technicians continue to work round the clock to replace critical network elements, while the Network Operations Centre continues to monitor the network and has deployed various mitigating measures to address any new and ongoing challenges.
“ While these improvements are being implemented, customers may still experience occasional service degradation. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and remain committed to restoring full-service reliability as quickly as possible,” Telecom stated.
In an unrelated note, Telecom and other internet service providers in the country experienced severe service delays at the beginning of June this year due to essential maintenance on the West Africa Cable System (WACS). The maintenance work was carried out on the high-capacity broadband undersea internet cable system linking Southern and West Africa to Europe to address a faulty branching unit offshore near Swakopmund
WACS is designed to support present and future Internet, e-commerce, data, video, and voice services. Its landing station in Namibia is Swakopmund, from which the cable travels inland to major towns and cities in the country.
The 14 000km WACS cable brings direct connectivity between Namibia, West Africa, the UK and the rest of the world, with a design capacity of at least 5.12 Tbit.
