WINDHOEK – With only four rounds of matches under the belt in the country’s flagship football league, the MTC Premiership teams are already finding the going tough in marathon matches scheduled within a space of 24 hours under searing heat.
Undisputed Namibian champions Black Africa dropped their first points of the current term when the Lively Lions were held to an uninspiring goalless draw by the league’s new boys Julihno.
Tigers finally woke up from the early slumber that saw the Donkerhoek outfit amass a paltry 2 points from their opening two matches. Ingweinyama defeated Eleven Arrows 3-2 in a 5-goal thriller at the Kuisebmond stadium in Walvis Bay on Sunday. Arrows were 3-1 conquerors of Rebels the day before.
Katutura glamour football club African Stars walloped league rookies Touch & Go by 3 unanswered goals in their own backyard in Otavi, while Civics saw off FNB Orlando Pirates 3-1. Returnees Benfica are still coming to grips with the tough and demanding rigours of topflight football after the Nomtsoub outfit went down 2-1 against Tura Magic.
Mighty Gunners continued their fine form since the start of the campaign – dispatching fellow newcomers Citizens by 3 goals without a reply.
Elsewhere, LHU Blue Waters dusted themselves off from their 2-0 defeat at the hands of old foes Tigers the previous day with a hard fought 2-1 win over new boys Rebels.
Another splendid display saw Unam, formerly Ramblers, shooting to the top of the MTC Premiership log standings courtesy of a 1-0 win against United Stars. The Clever Boys also came out tops in their match against Julihno, winning with an identical score line on Saturday to maintain their perfect start to the 2014/2015 season.
Civics collected maximum points in rounds 3 and 4 action after the rampant Civilians beat Mighty Gunners 2-1. Citizens recorded a shock 3-1 win over Pirates, while Tura Magic saw off Touch & Go 2-0. Woody Jacobs’ fired-up Reds demolished Benfica 4-0 and champions BA waltzed past United Stars with an unconvincing 2-1 victory.
