Unite against poverty – Mbumba

Unite against poverty – Mbumba

President Nangolo Mbumba has urged Namibians to unite in the fight against poverty, emphasising the importance of decent work and social protection as key pillars in improving the lives of all citizens.

“I urge all Namibians to play their part in lifting one another. Through unity and collaboration, we can realise a poverty-free Namibia,” he pleaded.

The President made these remarks yesterday through presidential spokesperson Alfredo Hengari stated his message  for the International Day of the Eradication of Poverty, to be observed today (17 October 2024), under the global theme ‘Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All.’

“This day serves as a reminder of the journey that still lies ahead in the pursuit to eradicate poverty and uplift our citizens, ensuring that everyone has access to a dignified life and a better future,” Mbumba said.

He then acknowledged that while Namibia has made strides towards eradicating poverty, there is still much work to be done.

He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to inclusive economic policies aimed at providing fair wages, safe working conditions and addressing inequalities, particularly those based on gender. “Social protection programmes such as the Basic Income Grant, old-age pensions, disability grants and support for vulnerable children and orphans have been instrumental in improving living standards. However, there is still more to be done,” Mbumba said.

He reiterated the government’s dedication to investing in critical sectors like education, healthcare and infrastructure, which he described as essential to uplifting and empowering Namibians.

Mbumba called on the private sector and civil society to play an active role in this collective effort, stressing that the government cannot tackle poverty alone.

“Through unity and collaboration, we can realise a poverty-free Namibia,” he said, urging all Namibians to work together to create a society where dignity and opportunity are accessible to everyone.
