US, Namibia protect financial systems and global security

The United States (US) and Namibia took an important step together to protect peace, security, and economic growth.

US ambassador to Namibia, John Giordano, spoke at the official launch of the National Counterproliferation Finance (CPF) Legal Frameworks Training in Windhoek last week.

The three-day workshop brought together key experts and officials from Namibia and the United States. It was organised by the US department of state and supported by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The training ended on Wednesday and focused on one clear objective which is helping Namibia strengthen its laws and systems to stop illegal financial activities linked to dangerous weapons. Speaking at the opening, ambassador Giordano said the training comes at an important time. He explained that criminals and hostile groups often misuse the global financial system to secretly fund nuclear, missile, and other unlawful weapons programmes.

These actors use money laundering and other tricks to hide where their money comes from and where it is going.

“Many financial institutions act in good faith. But without strong laws and careful checks, they can be taken advantage of. Strong legal frameworks protect banks, businesses, and the wider economy,” he said.

During the workshop, experts shared practical tools and best practices to help detect suspicious financial activities. Participants also explored ways to improve cooperation and information sharing among institutions. This will help Namibia build a safer, more transparent, and more competitive financial sector.

This training builds on similar workshops held in 2022 and 2024, showing a long-term commitment by both countries. Ambassador Giordano thanked Namibian partners for their continued dedication, saying their efforts helps protect not only Namibia, but also global security.

The ambassador also spoke about the strong and growing relationship between the United States and Namibia. He described Namibia as an important partner built on transparency, the rule of law, and shared values. He highlighted opportunities for cooperation in areas such as energy, critical minerals, and peaceful nuclear development under strict safety rules.

“Countering the financing of weapons of mass destruction is not just a legal issue. It is about keeping our people safe and building a better future,” he said.

Giordano said the United States’ support Namibia’s efforts to strengthen its financial and legal systems. He expressed confidence that by working together, both nations can create a safer world and a more prosperous future.

“This partnership matters. Together, we can make a real difference,” he said.
