Serious crimes and tragic incidents dominated the weekend crime report, keeping the police busy in both urban and rural areas.
Drug-related crimes
Cases of drug-related crimes were many. Police operations made several arrests in Kamanjab, Okahao, Katutura, Swakopmund, Tsumkwe, Trans-Kalahari, Uis and other areas. Suspects were found in possession of cannabis (including skunk and majat), cocaine and Mandrax tablets.
In one of the major busts, police stopped a freight truck near Kamanjab and recovered parcels of suspected cannabis concealed under a seat.
Violent crimes and domestic-related incidents
In Epako, an incident claimed the lives of a 26-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter after a violent attack inside their home.
A six-year-old boy survived and managed to run to the police for help. A 13-year-old suspect has been arrested.
Disturbing child-related incidents
In Okalongo constituency, a newborn baby girl was rescued alive from a pit latrine after being deliberately thrown inside. The infant sustained serious burn injuries but is receiving medical care.
In Kuisebmond, another newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a plastic bag but alive and taken to hospital. Social workers are now involved, and the police are appealing for public assistance.
Inquests and unexplained deaths
Cases of suspected suicide were reported in Okankolo and Opuwo, while unidentified bodies were discovered in Otjiwarongo and other areas. Post-mortem examinations are underway to determine the causes of death and to trace next of kin.
Sexual offences, assaults
The rape of an 11-year-old girl in Mariental, allegedly by a minor, as well as multiple assault and attempted murder cases involving bottles, knives and stones. Victims were treated at hospitals, and police investigations are ongoing.
Property, economic crimes
Housebreakings, theft from vehicles, fraud and motor vehicle theft were reported in Tsandi, Onethindi, Grootfontein, Oshakati, Klein Windhoek and Nkurenkuru. Several vehicles were stolen overnight, with no recoveries made so far.
Stock theft
Farmers in Keetmanshoop, Omaruru, Oshakati and Khomas Hochland experienced a loss of fauna, where goats and cattle were slaughtered or stolen.
In one case, a suspect was arrested after a vehicle linked to the crime was impounded.
Road crashes, reckless driving
A head-on collision near Omuthiya resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man, while other accidents in Otjiwarongo and Onayena left multiple people hospitalised.
Incidents involving police officers
In Usakos, suspects damaged a police vehicle and assaulted officers during arrests.
