Women encouraged to fall in love with tennis

The Central Tennis Club (CTC), in collaboration with Camisa, hosted their third annual Ladies Tennis Fun Day on Saturday at the Central Tennis Courts, introducing women to the sport in a fun and welcoming environment. A total of 150 ladies participated, with many leaving inspired to pursue tennis further.

According to Mary Beth Gallagher, director of the Ladies Tennis Fun Day, the event always coincides with Valentine’s Day, in line with the theme, ‘Fall in Love with Tennis.’

“Tennis is a sport that many women would love to play, but they may not have access to courts or a racket. It can also seem daunting or difficult to start. We created this event so that women can come to this venue, feel welcomed, meet new friends and become part of our tennis community,” said Gallagher.

One of last year’s participants, Hilya Imene, returned this year as a volunteer to help teach other ladies the basics of the sport and encourage them to join. She has since become a member of CTC and hopes to see more women taking up tennis.

Petrus Shilongo, vice chairman of the Central Tennis Club, said the annual event aims to promote not only tennis, but also health and fitness among women.

“We want to promote tennis in Namibia to women of all levels, whether professional or beginner, so that it can be enjoyed as a leisure activity while staying active. We have also significantly reduced membership fees for the ladies who attended today, making it easier for them to access our courts,” said Shilongo. -hnalupe@nepc.com.na
