WINDHOEK
With the Windhoek abattoir having been closed for maintenance for two weeks now until the end of the year, all operations are now being facilitated at the Okahandja plant.
The plant has enough cattle to keep it open until December. The Okahandja plant expects to slaughter about 31 100 cattle during the third period based on contracts signed with Meatco. An average of 3 000 to 9 000 cattle per month during the next four-months are expected to be slaughtered. “Because of the public holiday on the 26th, we will slaughter cattle on Saturday 22 August and will close the factory on 27 and 28 August to take a long weekend. In September, October, November and December there will be full slaughter throughout,” Meatco says.
The Okahandja plant is expected to close on December 23 and will reopen next March. Routine maintenance work would be conducted next January and February and a boiler installed. The Windhoek plant will reopen on January 4, 2016. “While slaughter depends on cattle numbers and the rainy season, we have a full house at the moment,” Meatco states.
