Namibia Democratic Party (NDP) leader Martin Lukato has won the hearts of Namibians following his party’s historic win of a single seat in parliament.

Recently, Namibians from all corners of the country have rallied together to raise funds to make sure the NDP president’s transition to the August House becomes a smooth one.

The initiative’s organiser, Mchangani Chikusi, said the funds are intended to cover his accommodation in Windhoek, with the remainder going toward his other living expenses.

Chikusi has pledged to pay for the incoming lawmaker’s flight from his dwelling in Katima Mulilo to Windhoek.

“We chose to help an elderly man due to our understanding of his political struggles. We sympathise with him,” he motivated.

He said the group backing Lukato is non-political but sympathisers from different political parties who have put aside their political differences.

So far, the group have raised over N$20 000 in cash.

The deadline for contributions is set for 28 February, as Lukato is expected to travel to Windhoek by early March.

Lukato expressed his gratitude to the good Samaritans who have come to his aid, acknowledging that such generosity has never been seen before in the history of politics.

“I feel that those who have seen my political journey and ambition to advocate for the better living standard of Namibia, Africa and the world at large have seen my political struggle journey. As a servant of the people, I could not surrender until I have achieved the victory to score a seat in the Parliament,” he expressed.

Lukato said he will represent the needs of all Namibians in Parliament.
