The newly elected president of the Namibian Deaf Sport Federation (NDSF), Uushona Peter, alongside his Executive Committee, has pledged to transform deaf sport into a powerful platform for inclusion, development, and socio-economic empowerment in Namibia.
Elected on 25 April, the new leadership says sport must be viewed beyond recreation, describing it as an industry capable of creating livelihoods, empowering youth, and contributing to national development.
The president, Peter, said the federation will align its work with national priorities, particularly President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s vision of placing sports development as a key pillar in Namibia’s development agenda.
“We firmly believe that sport is more than entertainment; it is a powerful industry that can drive sustainable livelihoods, wealth creation, youth empowerment, and socio-economic emancipation,” he said.
He added that the NDSF will work closely with government institutions, including the Namibian Sports Commission, Disability Sport Namibia, donors, and private stakeholders to ensure sport becomes more inclusive and accessible for deaf athletes across the country.
Under his leadership, the federation aims to strengthen talent identification and development programmes, introduce structured coaching clinics, and create clear pathways for deaf athletes to progress from grassroots to elite levels.
Key priorities include improving access to sports infrastructure and equipment, increasing Namibia’s representation at regional and international deaf sporting competitions, and promoting sport as a tool for economic empowerment through employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The president also stressed the importance of awareness and advocacy, noting that greater public understanding of deaf sport is essential in breaking down stereotypes and strengthening its role in national development.
He further committed to building a transparent and accountable federation that inspires confidence among athletes, families, and stakeholders.
“Our goal is to ensure that every deaf athlete has the chance to compete, succeed, and inspire, while contributing meaningfully to Namibia’s socio-economic development through sport,” he said. He will be deputised by vice president Abner Sheya, Treasurer Ndinomukulili Shamaila and additional members Hendrina Katindi and Helao Haihambo. The Secretary General will be appointed by the new executive committee.
