Swanu accuses Swapo of ‘legacy of poverty’

Home National Swanu accuses Swapo of ‘legacy of poverty’

OKANDJENGEDI – Swanu of Namibia says the Swapo-led government has failed the Namibian nation and wants to continue its legacy of poverty, money laundering, mediocre health and education, corruption and many people placed wrongly in jobs.

Swanu secretary general Tangeni Iiyambo at a recent meeting held with Swanu supporters at Okandjengedi said it is shameful and an insult that there are still Namibians who feed on dumpsites and have no shelter.
“How long more will Namibians enjoy unequal distribution of resources? There is certainly more to Namibia than the current abuse of Namibia by fellow Namibians,” charged Iiyambo.
He said Namibia has sufficient wealth to provide for all Namibians hence no person should sleep hungry or have no shelter.
Swanu will forge ahead to eradicate poverty and promote child welfare because it places families with children at risk of experiencing a wide range of negative experiences, including homelessness, high on its list of priorities.
Iiyambo noted that studies have shown that children and youth residing in owned and affordable rental homes consistently demonstrate better health, development and academic outcomes than their precariously housed peers.
He said the situation in Namibia with a lack of, or poor housing has a big negative impact on the future of children.
In the fight to eradicate child poverty and promote child welfare, Swanu recommends a permanent equality and children protection unit, prioritizing acquisition of land for resettlement, introducing a basic income grant, expropriating land in terms of the constitutional provision and giving to the poor, the introduction of and guarantee of welfare payments to anybody who is below the poverty line, and redistributing wealth based on basic needs.
