Nkurenkuru
Although Kavango West Region has two commercial banks, namely Standard Bank and Bank Windhoek, the region still wants more banking services for its inhabitants because of business that is booming.
This was announced by Sirkka Ausiku, Governor for Kavango West Region, who noted that many inhabitants of the region still depend on Kavango East for many services, including banking.
Ausiku was speaking on Thursday during her state of the region address in Nkurenkuru.
“We are demanding more banking services especially from First National Bank, AgriBank, SME Bank, Development Bank and Nedbank – that they open branches in Nkurenkuru,” she stated. According to Ausiku business in the region is booming since it was demarcated as a new region.
“I am also happy to report that we have a new and modern refuelling/filling station in Nkurenkuru, while another is under construction at Katwitwi settlement, 30km west of Nkurenkuru at the border post between Namibia and Angola,” she said.
Both banks each has one ATM and one branch to cater for the entire region and this compels many inhabitants to travel to Rundu for better banking services.
She further said Nkurenkuru has three shopping complexes under construction and an International University of Management (IUM) campus.
“Our business community has organized and established a NCCI branch. They were also trained on the new Public Procurement Act (Act 15 of 2015) by the National Tender Board, which equips them with requisite information and skills to enable them to participate in tender processes,” she added.
“In the same vein, we are further requesting the National Tender Board to give local business people preferential treatment in the awarding of tenders,” she noted.
