Cabinet Briefs

Cabinet concerned by heavy rain

Cabinet took note of the update on the rainfall situation, the prospects of the outbreak of locusts in the Southern African Development Community and the likely spread to Namibia.

The bulk of Namibia received normal rainfall, while some parts received above-normal rainfall between February and March 2025.

Cabinet directed the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform to commence with community awareness of the outbreak as well as control for locusts and the outbreak of other pests.

Cabinet further directed the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs to provide the necessary aerial and other assistance required to control the outbreak of locusts in the country.

The heavy rains over most parts of the country have damaged crops and infrastructure, forcing hundreds of people out of their homes due to constant flooding. Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Omusati are amongst the worst affected regions by the rain.

Namibia, Kenya seek cooperation on defence

Cabinet approved the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Namibia and the Government of the Republic of Kenya on defence cooperation to enable its finalisation by the parties.

The agreement seeks to provide a framework for enhanced reciprocal cooperation in the field of defence and security between the two parties. The contribution was submitted by the defence and veterans affairs minister.
