By Surihe Gaomas WINDHOEK RECENT joint operations involving law enforcement agents and the City Police resulted in over 60 fines being issued to motorists for various road traffic offences. Available statistics indicate eleven drivers were booked for speeding, while thirty-nine were flagged down and fined for driving motor vehicles without a driving license. Two of the offenders were booked for driving vehicles that were not roadworthy resulting in thirteen of the vehicles being removed from the road. Yet over the coming festive season, more traffic tickets are likely to be issued to culprits under the current ‘Broken Window Campaign.’ In terms of general road accidents in the city, the police are currently investigating a case of culpable homicide after a taxi apparently made a U-turn in Hosea Kutako road resulting in a fatal collision with an Iveco minibus. The incident, which occurred last week Thursday at around 14:00, claimed the life of one passenger, identified as 25-year-old Joseph Nghiaami. He died on the scene. In another incident in the capital’s Independence Avenue, an unidentified woman died on Saturday after she was bumped by a Toyota Corolla as she was attempting to cross the road. In other criminal activities over the weekend in Wanaheda, an adult male named Simon Shipenda was stabbed with a knife after a quarrel. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. This occurred in the late hours of Saturday night at about 23:00. Police reports say a suspect was arrested in connection with the murder, while investigations continue. In the Omusati Region, two deaths were reported at around 22:00 at Onhimbu location of the Ombalantu area, when Maria Da Conceicao aged 35 years and her 8-month-old daughter died instantly when a wall of the house they were staying in collapsed on them. Police reports are that the wall collapsed “probably due to strong winds blowing at the time” of the incident. Three other people however escaped with minor injuries and the next of kin have been informed. As part of an inquest case that happened last Sunday at about 22:00 at Oufa wa Helia village also in Ombalantu, two-year-old boy Andreas Awala died in a blaze when the hut in which he was sleeping caught fire. Two other minors escaped unhurt. In the Ohangwena Region at Ongha village, a pedestrian passed away when he was bumped by a car just after 18:00 on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Evangeline Hamunyela. Police investigations are ongoing. In other crimes, five rape cases were reported to the Namibian Police in just over two days. These incidents occurred between Thursday and Saturday last week. At around 05:00 on Thursday, a 20-year-old woman was raped in a storeroom at Club Kazond-jandja at Kuisebmund in Walvis Bay. The suspect whose identity is not known is still at large. Also on the same day, a 15-year-old girl from Otjiwarango was forced to have sex with a 41-year-old man. A suspect was arrested and appeared in court this week. Three other rape cases of two women and a minor were reported at LÃÆ’Æ‘Æ‘ÃÆ”šÃ‚¼deritz, Outjo and Katima Mulilo over the weekend.
