Dagbreek learners soak in desert landscape

Dagbreek learners soak in desert landscape

A group of learners from Dagbreek Resource School recently embarked on a journey into Namibia’s desert landscape.

The learners traded the classroom for the dunes, experiencing the wonders of nature, and the importance of sustainable living at the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) Centre.

Made possible through the support of Gondwana Namibia, the experience offered the learners a unique opportunity to connect with the environment and learn about the delicate balance between humans and nature.

Emilia Shatipamba, the Special Needs Teacher and Biologist, said the NaDEET Centre provided an immersive learning environment where the learners captured the desert’s raw beauty and the centre’s commitment to sustainability.

She further said the pupils were exposed to innovative methods of how humans can live in harmony with the environment by witnessing firsthand how the centre’s staff embodied sustainable practices.

“This hands-on experience will ignite a passion for conservation and environmental stewardship among the young participants. The students learned various methods for recycling, reusing, and reducing waste, along with insights into sustainability, nature conservation, and agricultural practices. They also explored how to grow a garden in a desert environment and engaged in games focused on sustainability,” she said.

She revealed the visit aimed to educate learners about sustainable lifestyles and biodiversity, which is crucial for understanding environmental stewardship and practical sustainability practices.

“Dagbreek Resource School sought this opportunity to enhance practical skills related to sustainability and agricultural practices, aligning with our commitment to providing learners with hands-on, real-world experiences,” she said.

Shatipamba revealed the visit to NaDEET Centre has left a lasting impression on all learners who participated.
