The Franco-Namibian Cultural Center is really happy to welcome at the National Gallery of Namibia, the exhibition Design Made in Africa whichÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ºpresents a unique collection of 45 objects that were created by 31 African designers and that embrace the entire field of environmental design: the context of life, body objects, urban objects. The origins of this exhibition date back to a series of workshops that were organized at Dakar at the end of 2003 and that brought together around twenty designers from Africa and France. Their work was then shown in Senegal and in France. Subsequently the project was launched to establish a large itinerant design exhibition for all African countries. The concept of this exhibition that will be shown from this week until 28 March is, on the one hand, to present a potential of creating new object models on the African Continent, which will make an attempt at synthesizing the local and the global. On the other hand, it is meant to provide to the world a showcase of objects that were created in Africa, and to evidence its heterogeneity. Since last week, a Zimbabwean designer, Ralph Gallagher, has been facilitating a workshop at UNAM with students and artists. The result of their work will be proposed with the exhibition. The official opening is on Tuesday at the National Arts Gallery at 18h00.
