Four people died on Wednesday night in a head-on collision between two passenger vehicles on the road between Rundu and Nkurenkuru.

Among the deceased is the Swapo regional mobiliser for Kavango East Region, Erick Tjandja, 44.

Tjandja, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle that collided head-on with a GRN vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, also served as the manager for Rundu Vocational Training Centre.

The occupants of the GRN vehicle have been identified as Buchani Sinvula, 30,   an agriculture technician based at Ruuga village in Kavango West, who was the driver; Gerson Mangande Mbanze, 48, and Hofin Johaness Nghikoyakusha, 25. They were travelling in a GRN white Toyota bakkie.

“Four people died, all male. Their next of kin have been informed,” confirmed Deputy Police Commissioner Uaakisa Ndjavera, the regional crime investigations coordinator for Kavango West Region, where the accident happened.

The accident took place on Wednesday evening at about 19h30, some 65km West of Rundu.

“We have established that the GRN vehicle overtook another vehicle and that is how it crashed into the private vehicle of Mr Erick Tjandja. Only the driver of the GRN vehicle worked for the ministry of agriculture. The others were just passengers,” confirmed Deputy Police Commissioner Ndjavera.

“The two passengers who survived are Veino Haingura, 25, and Elion Sikongo, 27, both male. They escaped with injuries. The post-mortems on the deceased will be done today (Thursday),” Ndjavera said.
