WALVIS BAY – With election day fast approaching, 134 officials are undergoing an eight-day training programme in Swakopmund.
Hosted by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), the training aims to equip returning officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage the electoral process.
Ultimately, this will ensure the delivery of credible elections in compliance with statutory frameworks efficiently and effectively. The training also focuses on electoral laws, procedures, conflict resolution and the use of technology in the voting process.
Speaking at the official opening of the training last week, ECN chairperson Elsie Nghikembua, highlighted the important role the officials play in the electoral process.
“As you are aware, the integrity and transparency of our electoral processes rely heavily on diligence and professionalism. Therefore, I wish to commend each of you for embodying these values during what was an intensive and demanding period in our electoral process,” she said.
She also took time to commend the officials for their hard work, dedication and resilience during the general registration of voters, which she described as a huge success in the history of the Commission and the country.
She further said the upcoming election would not only test ECN’s administrative capability but also an opportunity to reinforce public trust in the electoral process.
“Each one of you has been selected for your experience, dedication and unwavering commitment to our core values. You are the guardians of the integrity and transparency of our electoral system at the grassroots level, and the importance of your training cannot be overstated,” she added.
She urged participants to approach the workshop with the seriousness it deserves, emphasising that the commission expects 100% attendance at all training sessions, as the success of the upcoming electoral processes depends on their competence and professionalism.
“The Commission will not tolerate any laxity from electoral staff in the execution of their duties or any conduct that compromises our commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
Section 65 of the Electoral Act allows the Commission to make appointments and withdraw them at any time in the event of negligence of duties,” she cautioned.
